Daoni was born into the Caravan of the Siren's Sea: a female-dominated Caravan which had taken over an uninhabited isle of the coast of Greece many centuries earlier upon the urgings of their Shaman, whom had taken a deep interest in Grecian mythology, namely the sirens, and the Chief (a female water lynx who had taken a strong liking to the Shaman) was more than happy to relocate to the isolated isle. There the Shaman was able to delve more deeply into the legends of the Sirens and would often spend far more time in the company of humans in the Grecian libraries than he did with his Caravan.
Soon, however, the females of the Caravan had found more fascinating things to do and within mere weeks of moving onto the isle they discovered just how lonely sea-faring humans could get. Foolish men would come to rest in the quiet harbor of their island and never managed to escape, lured away by what the few survivors claimed were Sirens or Water Nymphs. Their method had become a game to them, but it lured many curious Defore and Euclides alike, all fascinated by the stories of 'Sirens'. Female Defores were happily accepted into the Caravan, so long as they were of the Water type, but they had become defiant about accepting males into their Caravan and would only accept their company for breeding purposes. When the kits were born, the males most often went away with their sire, but on the rare occasion that the sire would not take his sons, they were drowned.
It was on one of these occasions that Daoni was born.
His mother was a Nindian Artisan, and his father an American Cionre Pioneer who had been scouting through the territories in the Grecian area. He never found anything of satisfaction beside a few amorous nights with the Nindian Artisan before he left to return home. Daoni and his two sisters were eventually born from that short union, and the other females of Daoni's caravan were not at all happy to discover a male had been abandoned in their Caravan.
Luckily, before they could drown the young Hendunu kit, the Shaman happened upon the session and took pity on Daoni. He adopted the kit and returned with him to his cove on the other side of the isle where the other females would not have to deal with a male's presence.
The time that Daoni and the Shaman spent together would be short; no more than three decades, but in that time the Shaman would easily fall in love with the boy's serene and mysterious personality as well as his seductive charm. Every chance he got, the Shaman would take Daoni back to the mainland with him (in their human forms for both were Hendunu Defore), dressing him up as a female and more often treating him like a lover than a son. Daoni was a clever child, and had no trouble noticing his mentor's affections and he happily returned them all.
Yet, it was due to this closeness that Daoni was able to see the obsessive side to his mentor that the rest of the Caravan never truly saw. In fact, Daoni would not have been in the Shaman's care for more than five full years before Daoni himself became the object of the Shaman's obsessive research.
In the quiet of the Shaman's cave, he taught Daoni as much as he could about the Shaman's abilities. He trained the boy to use Shaman-like healing techniques and, in later years, to manipulate water spirits in the slightest degrees. However, during the time on the mainland, the Shaman bought Daoni the most expensive voice trainer in the town and worked on improving the boy's voice throughout his childhood.
Daoni's training would go on like that for the greater part of the three decades the two would spend together: a continuous quest to turn the young Defore into the closest emulation of a true siren as was possible.
Daoni could never clearly recall the events of his and the Shaman's final day in each other's company. Due to the aftermath, he has no trouble believing he simply blocked out the traumatic moments of the afternoon in a desperate attempt to cope. Nevertheless, the day started normally enough: the two had gone to a nearby island to swim in the warm waters of the lake there, only to be interrupted by a gnarled looking Hag. From the beginning she was a rude disgusting example of humanity and Daoni would've been happier to turn and leave, but she had clearly stated her offer before Daoni could convince his mentor to leave. She called the Shaman by his name, claimed she had been expecting them...that she knew what they needed to complete the experiment.
The offer was one that the Shaman could not resist, his obsessive nature wouldn't allow it, and there would be nothing in Daoni's power that could stop him. So, grudgingly, he followed after his mentor as the Hag led them to her lair: a small, damp cave as hideous as the Hag herself.
Her conversation was quick and to the point, a blessing to the two Defores as her voice was like listening to nails screech over a chalk board. She told them that she was a Sea Witch and that she'd been expecting the Shaman's arrival for years. But the one and only thing that mattered to the Shaman was that she had the final piece to his puzzle, the missing link that would allow him to create the siren he was so obsessed with. She left the room for a moment, and returned with a small wooden box, which she handed to the Shaman with the utmost relief.
As the Shaman opened the box, a putrid gas seeped out from within it, poisoning the air around them. Gagging, the Shaman fell first for he was closer to the poison, but Daoni didn't have time to run nor would he if he was given the chance. Instead he launched himself toward the Shaman in an attempt to close the lid of the box before whatever it was inside had done too much damage. He succeeded in what he had attempted to do, but as the world faded into darkness he got one last glimpse into the Sea Hag's savage, hungry eyes and knew that it wouldn't be enough.
When Daoni's memory finally returned to him, he was sprawled in a pool of blood, staring listlessly at a mutilated form mere inches from his muzzle. How long he laid there, in the stench of death and rot, Daoni isn't quite sure, but at one point the realization that he was actually staring at his mentor finally dawned upon him. Yet he couldn't bring himself to move, to accept that he had lost the one person that meant everything to him. From there everything became foggy once more, and time itself seemed to start and stop. From the cave to the beach, his master in the hands of his anthro form. An eternity on the beach, last moments with the man he loved, and then the Shaman was sinking into the ocean. Daoni was abruptly on the move once more.
