I have a story/plot between the two of them, so they most certainly know one another. And it is very much a matter of competition. Ven thinks Fi's trade is useless and infantile compared to his 'art'. Fili likely believes that Ven is a sick, twisted little bastard. Both claim that the other stole their 'technology'.
